Get date from date prompt using javascript

I have seen several techniques to set the date value on a date prompt, but I need to get the value.  Does anyone know what I can use.  pickerControlDatePrompt.value doesn't work and pickerControlDatePrompt.getValue() doesn't exist.  Any help is appreciated.
