Upgrade from Cognos BI 8.2 -> 8.4.1

* What do I have to do to maintain all users/groups and permissions to the projects/folders and reports prior to the upgrade stadium.?
* What files do I have to backup and insert into the new installation, ex cnrlocale.xml, server.xml, system.xml?
* Can I install the new version on another location on the server and the copy/replace the above listed files in the correct location?

I need a good tutorial or best practices.

Dear all.
I'm also looking for feedbacks regarding upgrade from 8.2 to 8.4 especially with Metrics.
Can it be smoothly handled or does it require to redevelop scorecards ?
