How to test Server Change
« on: 11 Jan 2013 12:45:10 pm »
Hi Cognoise friends,

We are changing the backend reporting database server from ServerA to ServerB.
All the required databases (with all data) from ServerA has been copied to new server (ServerB).

I need to test everything that may impact the underlying reports that had ServerA databases as source after that server is replaced by new server (ServerB).
I'm not sure if:
creating a new datasource with ServerB connection string then replacing the datasource in Framework Manager and republishing the package
is better than
changing the Connection string in the existing datasource and republishing the package?

Questions:
What are the Best practice to follow to implement this change without affecting the existing reports in Production? (step by step guidance is greatly appreciated :) )

Note: we do have Cognos Dev and Cognos Prod.

Thank you in advance,
Slim.

Hi Slim,

We currently do this in our dev environment where we point to a dev db and prod db to test before release. In your case Server A vs Server B.

There is no need to create a new data source/ publish whole new package, report update and...

Only step you need to do is to go to you data source you configued for Sever A and add a new connection with respective DB Creditials. Result when you run the report you will get a prompt which says select Server A or Server B.

Only disadvantage doing it this way is that as long as you have this Server A and Server B point you will be prompted each time to make your selection.

I hope this makes sense.

Thanks,
RK
