Export .mdc data to excel, csv or text file.
« on: 26 Jun 2013 12:29:30 am »
Hi,

I have a requriement to view and export .mdc(Bulid) data to excel, csv or text file. I don't want to get into Powerplay for this. i am aware that if we use powerplay we could view the .mdc data, but doesn't want to get into it.

Is there any extrenal method to achieve the same?

Hi Dinesh,

you could use Report Studio in Cognos BI Server to write a report to output to excel or csv using the powercube as a data source.

Here's an info center article (example using samples) on setting up an mdc as data source:

http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/cbi/v10r1m0/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.swg.im.cognos.qrc_inst.10.1.0.doc%2Fqrc_inst_id4854smpls_Create_Data_Source_Connection_to_O.html

All the best,

Simon

What do you want to use if not the tools intended? It is like saying you have a hammer in your toolbox but you want to drive a nail into the wall without using a hammer.

There must be more to your requirement that isn't clear to me.

If you are looking to produce an excel file in some automated way then why not create a Report Studio report, save it, and then schedule it to burst to a network drive or send via email or save to the content store. If that isn't what you need then perhaps try explaining more about what you are trying to achieve.

Sorry for making you confused.. Mentioned below my requriement.

I have a ipad dashboard requriment where in i have a javascript global and cognos list report aside it. For cognos list report we are using cube package as source and for Javascript global we have used vb script to get data from our source table and convert to it xml. vb script will feed the xml as input to javascript global.

Since cognos list report is pointing to cube package and global is pointing to our database, there is mismatch in our data. Yes offcourse i aspect that if i prepare a ppr report or report studio report, as mentioned by you i can scheduled it and make it avaliable for Javascript global input. But our admin team doesnt what to run report services many time (since in our requriement - cube will get update every 30 mins). Thus admin doesn't want us to invoke report services every 30 mins.

Thus we are trying to extract data from .mdc file directly with some vbscript of other external method so that we wont use report service at all, as well we will meet the requirement.

Hope this makes you clear, please revert for any further inputs.
