Suppress Duplicate Values - checkbox setting
« on: 20 Jan 2016 09:28:13 am »
In my project, I have a view that is suppressing duplicate values.   When ever I add in three fields from that view (for instance, Establishment ID, Product Serial, and Submission Type) and then filter the report by Establishment ID,  I come up with 1 record for the report.  But when I add the primary key ID field (from the same view) to the report, it returns 15 records including some duplicates.

My users want to see the duplicates and don't want them to be suppressed.   This is for an Ad Hoc project - so my users are using Query Studio 10.2.1 for right now.  And I see there is a checkbox to turn off "Automatically Suppress Duplicate Values" under the Advanced Options when you run a report in QS.    I discussed this with my users yesterday, and they didn't warm to it because they were concerned that they'd have to go there and uncheck that box every single time they wanted to see duplicates, and that this seemed tedious to them at best.

In Query Studio is there a way to set that "Automatically Suppress Duplicate Values" checkbox to unchecked by default?

You could create a report that has that setting unchecked for users to open and then "save as" for their reporting. Permissions could be set to prevent any accidental saving of it. They'd simply start off with that template report instead of starting from launch menu.

There is also a way to create templates that appear in the new report dialog. Instead of picking list or crosstab or whatever they'd select their template as the starting point.

Either approach would let you create a header and footer with whatever standard look and feel is desired as an added benefit.

Sorry I must have mis-remembered about a system.xml change to alter that behavior which I mentioned in your other post about this topic on the Framework Manager board. I think what I was remembering was having preview mode vs. run with data mode set upon launch.

Otherwise, perhaps a count metric in your model would be sensible. If they include that in the report you described they'd see the one record for a particular Establishment ID, Product Serial, and Submission type along with the count of 15 to give them the same context as if they had all the repeated rows displayed. Of course I don't know the requirements in detail but are they perhaps creating data extracts for export to be used in something else? Cognos is capable of some really sophisticated analysis so understanding why they need to see the duplicated stuff might shed some light on how the Cognos model can be improved to answer their needs more directly.

Yeah confessional time, I need some grace - I think that was my mistake.  I have a difficult time remembering some things.   No malice intended.  :)
