.dmp files getting generated in the bin folder
« on: 05 Jun 2014 10:41:47 am »
hi all,

we are facing an issue where .dmp files are getting generated in the bin folder at the installed location of cognos 10.2.1.

these files are eating up lot of space on the drive, and i guess hampering the performance also.

Could anyone guide me how to tackle this issue ?

Regards

You can disable this permanently.

open the cclWinSEHConfig.xml file from the c10_location\configuration directory.

In the configuration element, change the value of the environment variable setting to 0 (zero) so that it reads
<env_var name="CCL_HWE_ABORT" value="0"/>

Otherwise you will need to setup some batch script to delete on regular basis(like monthly). Sometimes IBM may ask you these dump files for their investigation otherwise those are not at all needed.
Thanks

The bajillion-zillion-million dollar question is... why are these .dmp files getting created in the first place? It sounds to me like your Cognos instance is having some critical issues and crashing periodically. Why? Can you tie the files in to specific reported issues occurring? I'd be very tempted to log a ticket with IBM if so, and have them get to the bottom of the root cause.

Just my couple of pennies :)

Hello Friends,

This is such an old thread. But I m having the exact same issue. Have been using parameter maps in FM in Dynamic Query mode to implement
Data Level Security. Have had multiple issues with cognos/bin and logs folder getting filled with dump files, causing the application to be significantly slow and eventually crashing. Aggregate functions that were working before don't seem to validate. We are on version 10.2.1 and no fix packs have been applied.

Not sure why these dump files are being created? What is the impact of disabling core dump files creation?

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

You're trying to use DQM on 10.2.1 with no fix packs.  Ooooh!  I'm sorry.  Good luck.  For 10.2.1 I recommend a fix pack after FP3 if you are going to try using DQM.  I'm not sure when DQM actually started working, but it wasn't working properly in FP3.

I have never seen a .dmp file with a date stamp that matched any trouble report or any logged error message.  This may be because a 4 GB .dmp file takes a little while to create.  It may just be because there is no direct relationship.  There is nothing useful for me in a .dmp file.  In fact, I have never had IBM Support find any use for them.  There is really no reason to create them other than to promote the sale of larger hard drives.

I think the impact of disabling core dump files creation is you don't get the useless dump files.  (Just this morning, I deleted over 20 GB of these.  Most of them were created yesterday.  I had no trouble tickets yesterday.)
