I am considering taking the IBM course "IBM Cognos Framework Manager Design Metadata Models (V10.2.2) - SPVC (Code J2A52G)" in order to take the the cert test for "C2090-632 - IBM Cognos 10 BI Metadata Model Developer".

However, my company is moving to Cognos Analytics (aka 11) early next year. So I have a few questions.

1. Is FM still used in CA as the primary tool for modeling?
2. Will what I learn in the above course translate well to CA and FM 11?
3. Do you feel it's worth waiting for a v11 course and test?.. and how long does IBM usually take to update their courses and tests?

Thanks in advance for your response!

Hi,

Yes, CA is still the primary modelling tool in CA. A new browser-based modelling UI has also been added (Data Modules) but these are much simpler than FM models and are not suitable for multi-fact multi-grain scenarios (unlike FM, which does all this and more).

FM is virtually unchanged between Cognos 10.2.2 and Cognos Analytics, so what you learn on the 10.2.2 course will still be relevant and current.

I don't really see a good reason to wait for a v11 certification in this case, since the UI and concepts in FM 10 vs FM 11 are exactly the same.

Cheers!

MF.

Thanks MFGF, another question if you don't mind:

I'm reading Cognos 10: The Official Guide and I feel it's sinking in pretty good. This particular course (above) is $1750. Do you feel this and similar IBM Cognos courses are worth the cost? (assuming you have taken some of them)

Hi,

If it's the official course, it's 5 days training, and in my (humble) opinion it's worth every penny / cent. Do bear in mind I spent a decade teaching these courses, though, so I may be slightly biased :)

I have taken several IBM courses over the years, although never had the pleasure of being taught by the Muppet  :)

My opinion is also that they are very worthwhile --- and I paid my own way since I was an independent consultant for many years.

I should add that IBM were still running the official training when last I took a class and I've not had a course since they outsourced this to certified partner firms a number of years back.

Good luck!

Thank you both! Excited to get certs outside of SQL Server.
