Cognos Workspace 10.2.2
« on: 10 Jun 2019 06:56:45 pm »
Hi All,

We are planning to upgrade to Cognos Analytics 11.1  from the current version 10.2.2.
We have around 84 Dashboards with around 5 different tabs consisting of  6 widgets per tab built in Cognos Workspace 10.2.2.

I understand that cognos workspace dashboards will not be converted/upgraded easily to CA Dashboard and this requires using Legacy Studio in 11.1 .

I have couple of questions to get clarified here:
1.Existing Dashboards: If we want to continue viewing our existing cognos workspace dashboards using the legacy studio, do we still require  IBM Widget Reset Utility tool whenever there is change in the underlying report to do it automatically?
2. New Dashboards: We will use Dashboard Studio for the new dashboards. Does it require widget Reset Utility tool to reset automatically?

Please advise

Thanks

Regards
Geetha

Hi,

The technologies used in Cognos Workspace and Cognos Analytics Dashboards are completely different. In Workspace, you are re-using components from previously authored reports, whereas in CA Dashboards you are creating widgets from scratch based on items of data.

You can continue to use the Cognos Workspaces you have authored after you upgrade. Cognos Workspace is still a part of Cognos Analytics as one of the legacy technologies, meaning your workspaces will work and can be used in the same way as in Cognos 10. One small difference is that the "Do More" option no longer exists. In Cognos 10, this would launch you into Cognos Workspace Advanced and allow you to edit a widget, but CWA no longer exists in Cognos Analytics. There is no option to take Cognos Workspaces and convert them to Cognos Analytics dashboards, though.

As far as updating content in workspaces is concerned, the message is that it's no different from Cognos 10. I assume the Widget Reset Tool will work, but in all honesty I haven't tried it - it would be worth you checking before you upgrade.
Cognos Analytics dashboards do not have widgets based on underlying reports, so there is no concept of having to reset them to accommodate changes in an underlying report.

Cheers!

MF.

Now I understand that cognos workspace dashboards can be upgraded easily to CA 11.1.7 Workspace (via Legacy Studio)

As we estimating the effort in upgrading from Cognos 10.2.2. to 11.1.1, I would like to have a clarification  on whether Cognos workspace Dashboards will be deployed automatically or should I drag and drop underlying reports in to the legacy cognos workspace studio from the scratch?
Please advise

Hi,

The workspaces will work fine in Cognos Analytics without you having to re-author them. Each Workspace widget is effectively a hidden XML report spec copied from the source report. If you take the option to upgrade your report specs while importing your 10.2.2 content this should upgrade these too.

Cheers!
