Hi,
I am planning to install COGNOS 8.4 on my VAIO which came with pre installed WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM 64 bit operating system. I have contacted some people in the near by coaching centers but all of them have said that "its not possible to install it on VISTA and 7". when i inquired about the reason for it none of them were actually able to give me a reason for it.
I would really appreciate if some one can tell me the reason why it cannot be installed on VISTA or 7, Also if it is possible, can you explain me the necessary steps and precautions to install it.
Thanks,
I do not think I will bring more clarity, but I just tried to install it on Win 7 yesterday and the installer detects that it is not Windows XP (NT) and aborts the installation. Then I looked into the list of supported platform and came to know that even 8.4.1 does not support Win 7.
My experience tells me that they did not have time to certify this platform(s), and I hope that IBM would support Win 7 by the end of the year (just my guess, no insider information :-) the next Cognos release.

I would agree Vista won't work, but I've successfully installed to Windows 7 Professional. I don't think it will work on Win7 Home, though. Windows Home versions usually are missing server components. (For example, supported XP is Professional only, not home).
not sure about Win 7 home, but we can definitely install on XP home. Its just that you won't have webserver and you'd have to access Cognos directly through dispatcher....
Installation on Windows 7 is not a problem! I don't have experience with the 64 bit version, but 32 bit is not a problem.
If you want to install send me your E-mail address in a personal message and I can send you a Word document on how to install it. The word document has all sorts of screen shots in it for every single step!
If you are using IIS 7.0 (that's what I used when installing for the Word document) check the following:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21343353
If you are using IIS 7.50 check the following:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21381516
If you are installing Cognos 64 bit on a 64 bit OS it is possible that you need to run IIS in 32 bit mode. (This is because a part of the 64 bit suite is still in 32 bit. And that part is the website)
In order to run IIS in 32 bit mode run the following in a command prompt:
cscript [your location]\adsutil.vbs SET W3SVC/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1
(Search for the adsutil.vbs to fill in [your location])
Thanks Plantje,
i have sent you an email with the the same subject as that of the heading of the thread,
i would really appreciate if you can send me the doc file.
Please check that again, because I haven't received an E-mail yet...
Hi Plantje/Rudi,

If you're having problems, just let us know what bits you are struggling with, and we may be able to help. It will probably work out quicker than waiting for someone to send you a document, especially given the apparent reluctance of the poster to make it publicly available...

Hi people,
If ever you need to find out if you can install Cognos to a specific platform, I'd suggest that you read the supported environments page as per below
https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27014110
I've worked in IBM Cognos Support for a few years and this is where I suggest people look before jumping into this type of endeavour.
As you will find, Cognos 8.4 does not support Windows 7, and Vista only maginally
Microsoft Windows 7 Not Supported Not Supported
Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Active Active for Browser and Client only
Microsoft Windows Vista Compatible Compatible for Browser and Client only
Tip to find the supported environments page ... google keywords ( IBM Cognos <version you are after, e.g. 8.4> supported environments)
If you want to install Cognos on Windows 7 I'd suggest you look at 8.4.1
https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27017522
Hope this helps for future reference.
Cheers

Can anybody please send the word document or pdf how to install cognos 8.4 in windows 7 .

Hi all,
I'll like you to be warned that if you do install 8.4.0 what ever Fixpacks on Windows 7 and something goes wrong you will NOT be supported by IBM Cognos. They will point you at the supported environments page and tell you to upgrade to 8.4.1. If you have a valid license for IBM Cognos 8.4 then you can download 8.4.1 from passport advantage
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/howtobuy/passportadvantage/
I'd strongly recommend you heed this warning as I do have knowledge of this from past experience.

Hi there all,
I've just discovered that Windows 7 comes with a vitual Environment using XP so it can be installed on Windows 7 sort a kinda as long as you set up and configure the Virtual environment which runs XP.
http://apcmag.com/inside-windows-7s-virtual-xp-mode.htm
We've just completed an install of 8.4 FP2 Framework Manager and Transformer and it works a treat. You'll have to make sure though that you understand IBM Cognos's Virtual policy that covers this scenario.
So apologies, I was sort a kinda wrong
Cheers

Use the "My Messages" link at the top of the page to sent Srinivas a personal message. It's really not a good idea to post your email address publicly on here - you are inviting spammers and phishing scams. If I were you, I would remove my email address from the post (or I or any of the moderators can do it for you if you wish?)

Hi all,
Its really not this difficult.
1. You CANT install 8.4.0 directly onto WINDOWS 7 (Final, no arguements, finito)
2. You first need to install XP MODE onto WINDOWS 7.. See http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
3. Startup XP MODE on your WINDOWS 7 desktop
4. LOGON to The XP console on your WINDOWS 7 desktop. See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7
5. (XP Console) Map a drive to where the Cognos 8.4 software exists or if you have media use the cdrom
6. (XP Console) Install Cognos 8.4.0
I hope this helps to solve this long running thread
Cheers

Email: It's not here. It was, then it wasn't. I think a Muppet removed it. I'm not quite sure how I managed to miss the fact that he has removed every other email address and asked people not to post their addresses publicly. Maybe I did notice and thought I'd be ok? Oh well. It's gone now. I had better not post it up again or I may get into a bit of muppety trouble.

I wonder if any of the moderators will spot that I included my email address in the post here?

I got the 'NT 4.0 or higher required' error when attempting to install Cognos 8.4.0 Modeling on a Windows 7 laptop. I noticed alot of answers here referred to links, or offered to help via email, I wanted to post the solution I used.
Create a shortcut to iisetup.exe. Go to the shortcut properties and select 'Compatibility' tab. Check the box next to 'Run this shortcut in compatibility mode for:' and select 'Windows XP (Service Pack 3)' from the dropdown. Click ok, then run the shortcut. Modelling will install without any problems.
