Title: Cognos Express demo - database safety
Post by: bbrown on 20 May 2011 09:03:54 AM
I've just downloaded Cognos Express and my I.S. dept is hooking me up to the test database which is on the iSeries.  They are concerned that I am going to write a "runaway query" that will take down the iSeries.  I currently use Showcase Query & Report Writer and there are safety nets in place to prevent runaway queries from occurring.  Is that something that is built into Cognos Express?  If not how do you prevent queries from bogging down the iSeries with Cognos?  I am evaluating Cognos for our company and we need to be aware of any consequences of allowing end users to design queries and reports.
Thx a lot
Brenda

Hi Brenda,

Queries generated by the Reporter module of Cognos Express are based on the metadata in the reporting package, which originates from Framework Manager.  Within Framework Manager, governors can be defined to limit runaway queries, based on number of rows received, execution time limits etc etc.  These need to be set before the metadata package is published.

Best regards,

MF.

Thank you.  That is very simliar to what we have in place with Showcase and I thought there had to be something in Cognos.  Thanks for pointing out where to look.
