Will you be the only one accessing this Cognos instance?

Since Cognos is web-driven, you will need a Web server installed and started. We utilize IIS. The basic "quick" steps to setting up Cognos are:
- Configure the Cognos environment (Cognos Configuration)
- Create the Content Store (database) for Cognos
- Setup the db client
- Configure the Web server
- Configure the Web browsers

Cognos has a multitiered architecture: Web server (tier 1), applications, and data.

Refer to the Cognos 8.3 or 8.4 Architecture and Deployment Guide for more information:

If your goal is to:
"Installing All Components on One Computer
Install all components on one computer only for proof of concept or in demonstration environments
where the user load is small. Because the gateway must be located with the Web server, the single
computer must also be running a Web server."
