Title: Manual entry in reports
Post by: sunita.dudi on 13 Sep 2012 02:55:39 AM
Hi
I got requirement from my client where they run a report say R1 in excel format and then add some data manually to excel output of R1. Next they run another report say R2 and calculations in R2 should consider data from R1.
How do i implement this requirement?? Is it fisible in cognos report studio?
They do not want R1 data to be written back to database.

Thanks

That sounds really dodgy :-)

In theory you can use a spreadsheet as a source in a report so you can run R1 save it as a spreadsheet then use that as attributes in R2.  You would do that using the managing external data icon (think that may only be in C10 though).

In reality it isn't that easy, the spreadsheet from R1 would need to have the same name and be in the same location each time otherwise you would need to relink and probably re-write R2 everytime.

Sounds like a really bad idea.

What additional data do they want to see?

If they don't write the additonal data added to R1 back to the database there will be no audit trail of where the calculations came from and you will loose the integrity of the database (from a 'single version of the truth' point of view).

If you can give us more specific details of the requirement we might be able to come up with a better solution

Thanks Wyconian for reply.
We have C10 installed ......we actually asked client for write back option but they don't want it. We are still trying if they agree for write back option or else we are planning to go for macros.....but the problem would be same as u mentioned location n name of file

This sounds more like the kind of thing a user might do in the Desktop solution - Cognos Insight. Is that an option in this case?
