Title: Cognos upgrade/migrate(Distributed)
Post by: sdf on 26 May 2014 07:40:37 PM
Hi,

We are planning to upgrade our current cognos 10.1.1 to cognos 10.2.1.
Our current setup is distributed (10.1.1)
c10-64
    *BI Server App Tier
    *Content Manager
    *Mobile App Tier

c10
    *BI server gateway
    *Metric server gateway
    *Mobile gateway

c10Metric
    *Metric App Tier

What I want to know is if the upgrade process will be straight forward as if just installing the components again and designating them to the right directories.

Also, would like to know what are the things to be backed-up and if there will be any changes in the configuration.

Any Thoughts??

I browsed the documentations of 10.2.1 and try to google some procedures.

Found two approach, and I would like to know your insights/comment into which one is better.

First Approach (generic)
1. Uninstall 10.1.1 BI (all components)
2. Install 10.2.1
3. Restore full content backup

Second approach (documented)
1. Backup content store db
2. Backup configuration directories of 10.1.1
3. Backup images files
4. Install 10.2.1 in parallel to 10.1.1 (of course different install path)
5. Restore content store db
6. Restore full content backup
7. upgrade reports
8. uninstall 10.1.1

the second approach may look as best practice but im wondering if restoring the full content backup to 10.2.1 will automatically upgrade the content store db and the reports.

I really need your advise.

Hi,

Content store backup is important in both cases. Content store backup should be taken from cognos connection as well as from DB end.

Once you install 10.2.1 CM, just configure the content store DB there and start the configuration, content store should get upgraded by itself. Starting content manager will take hrs, this depends on size of your content store. It might take 24hrs also if your content store is too large.
Meanwhile you can start with installation of your application server, gateway server.

I am assuming there is no change in authentication provider here. If there is change in authentication provider then it will be slightly complicated.

Thanks for your reply, there would be no changes in the authentication and we will use the same server.

Would like to know which would you prefer, parallel install or uninstall/install approach?

Thanks!

Is your current Metric App Tier on a separate server because it is 32-bit? If so, you may be able to simplify your architecture when you upgrade - Metric Server is now 64-bit and can install into the same instance as your 64-bit Cognos 10 BI (if you want it to).

Cheers!

MF.

Hi MF,

nope, we have everything in one server. I just  installed metric app to another x32 bit directory.
Im aware about the 64bit Metric server but I stick to the structure I know.
Anyway, can you suggests steps for upgrading/migrating our current setup (with metric x64)

Thanks!
