Title: Alternative Content Store Database
Post by: Chamopak on 22 Jun 2015 08:15:56 AM
The Cognos Express uses the Informix database as its default content store database.
Is is possible (and Allowed) to use an alternative e.g. SQL Server for the content Store?

Hi,

Not in versions of Express up to and including 10.2.1, no. In all versions to this point, Informix is the only content store database you can use.

If you upgrade to Express 10.2.2, however, you can use a content store in SQL Server :)

Hi

Question,  what is the difference in installing Cognos Express 10.2.1 with 10.2.2  or BI 10.2.2
Thank you for your answer

Will the installation process change completely to resemble the Enterprise / BI or its the installation of 10.2.2 same as 10.2.1  but with the option of choosing your content store?

From 10.2.2 onwards, Cognos Express is now just a licensing model for Cognos 10 BI and TM1. There is no longer a specific download for Express - you download the enterprise versions of BI and TM1 and install them as you would install an instance using enterprise licensing. For BI 10.2.2 there is a new "quick install" that gives you a BI instance using DB2 as a content store and web access via the servlet gateway (so no web server required), or you can do a "normal" install and set up your own content store and web server. The old Express method of installing a Manager instance (with Informix content store) which then auto-provisions BI and TM1 is gone.

Cheers!

Hi,

There isn't much in the docs, sadly. Take a look at the Express 10.2.1 Manager guide, chapter 4 and the section "Upgrading from Express to an Enterprise product".

http://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/documentation/docs/en/10.2.1/ig_exprss.pdf

This is essentially what's happening in terms of the product when moving to Express 10.2.2 - the installs are the same as for the Enterprise versions.

I did find this in the document:
You do not need to install a web server. The Quick Setup option configures a
servlet gateway as part of the installation, meaning that there is no need for a
web server

Does this mean that there is still a seperate Express installer of does the new BI 10.2.2 come with an automatic / Quick Setup Option?

No - there's no separate Express installer. Cognos BI 10.2.2 has a quick install option that installs the Cognos 10 BI with the servlet gateway and DB2 for use as a content store and a My Data Sets repository.

I am having problems starting up the CXMD in the 10.2.2 env.

Is there a specific setting for the tm1s.cfg to be able to start the old 10.2.1 TM1 server into the new 10.2.2 env?

Not as far as I'm aware. What security setting (integratedsecuritymode) is defined in tm1s.cfg? Are you using the same authentication provider?

Good to see that other database can now be userd as content store. However, IBM says: IBM Cognos Content Database can be used where you do not want to implement a commercial database for the content store, such as in a test or proof-of-concept environment. You must use a supported commercial database for the content store in a production environment.

Does someone know how the licensing for the commercial database should be? Or can I use SQL Server Express?

Hi,

No - SQL Server Express isn't supported for use as a content store database.
