Title: Is there technique to control color assignments in canned visualizations?
Post by: FerdH4 on 22 Apr 2026 09:26:52 AM
I have a stakeholder who has a really strong interest in controlling colors in a Stacked Column visualization - I'm using Cognos v11.2.3 and using the canned Stacked Column graph found in the "11.0 visualization" gallery.

This can't be solved just by changing the Palette as this stakeholder wants me to set specific colors for each of the 10 known text values which represent the Segments in the columns.  Like when the related data field has a value of "Low" color the related segments (and legend) as yellow.

If this isn't an option available with the 11.0 visualizations, can this be done using graphs from other galleries like maybe the really old-school canned graphs from v10?

Quote10 known text values

That sounds like legend entries, for which I'm pretty sure you can set the palette.  Maybe example input data and desired outputs.

Thanks dougp - I think you were trying to get me to include more of the specifics.  It's literally like my example of  Like when the related data field has a value of "Low" color the related segments (and legend) as yellow.

But it's "Low-Low", "Low", "Low-High", "Medium-Low", "Medium", "Medium-High", "High-Low", "High", and "High-High" with graduated colors of Yellow (Light Yellow, Medium Yellow, and Dark Yellow), Orange, and Red.

I'm using 12.0.4 and just tried this with the stacked column chart from 11.0 and 11.1.  Works fine.  Did you drag your labels column to the "colors" box on the viz?

Or is the problem the "specific colors"?  I don't see the ability to create a custom palette for the 11.0 visualizations.

And why 11.2.3?  I think 11.2.4 is the LTS release.

I don't know what this is but I'm gonna look because it sounds interesting - "Did you drag your labels column to the "colors" box on the viz?"

As for "And why 11.2.3?  I think 11.2.4 is the LTS release." - we have a long history of running behind on Cognos upgrades but I've heard word that we might be moving to 12.something later this year.  Unfortunately, I don't control the environment - I'm just a user. :(

The issue really is "the specific color". :( :(

Thanks Statesman!

Yeah, it's the 11.0 viz that's the problem then.

In case you have any influence, 11.2.4 and 12.0.4 are LTS releases.  It looks like 11.2.4 general support ends in 3 days (https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/lifecycle/search?q=cognos%20analytics).  Extended support is available.  There is not yet a LTS release for 12.1.x.  If release cycle is typical, that should be available in October.  In my experience, using a release before LTS is somewhat risky.  LTS tends to have fewer problems* and remains stable and receives patches over the 2-4 years after release.  So, if they are moving to 12.something soon, hopefully it's 12.0.4.

* ...but 11.1.7 (LTS) was broken when released.  I had to wait for IF 1021, then FP2 (or FP3?) to get a product I could use.
