Title: Set Cognos Hostname
Post by: pxy2d1 on 13 May 2010 05:10:44 AM
All,

I am very inexperienced with Cognos so apologies if my question requires more information than given.

We have recently pointed users from one system to another by NATTING the IP address so that they required no change at their end. This worked in general but we seem to be having problems with the Cognos part of the system.

We believe (please correct if I am wrong) that Cognos uses the hostname given at install to build the URL needed to access reports in a browser. After our change users think they are accessing one system - SYS1, but are actually accessing data on SYS2 and the problem seems to be that the hostname coming back from SYS2 does not match the URL hostname that the users are accessing.

Is there a way to change the hostname given at install, allowing us to change the hostname on SYS2 to match that of SYS1 temporarily.

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Just launch Cognos Configuration, click on the Environment setting on the left, and change the environment URIs to use your new host name.

Regards,

MF.

Did you NAT (change one IP address to route to another) or change the DNS entry?  If the former, I don't think it would work since your name resolution of SYS1 will go back to the old server like you are seeing.  If you are trying to change the server temporarily, most people stop the old server (SYS1) then rename SYS2 to be SYS1 and change the DNS entry (assuming you are using server name) - assuming you cloned the config.

If you are trying to move them to the new server (sys2), then you need to do as MFGF says and repoint to all settings to SYS2.  If you don't want to republish links between servers, you can get away with a new DNS entry for the gateway (cognos.mycompany.com), set that for the gateway URI,  and have that point to one server or the other, depending on which is active.

Re: changing hostname at install - dispatchers are either machine name or localhost, machine name recommended (required?) for multiple server installations.  You cannot make it be other than itself.
