Reporting / Point in time report filter
« Last post by reportit on Today at 08:40:06 pm »
Hello,

I’m working point-in-time report and would like to add department filter so leadership can see counts by dept.  I'm pulling the department field from our history data but I’m having issues with the filter I added through.  I started by creating the department filter.  When I run the report for our ‘Sales' dept, the report includes employees previously in our ‘Sales’ dept; these employees should not be in the report since they were not in 'Sales' on the date selected.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix it?

Thanks Paul! Changing to macro prompt and handling the dot did the trick!

It's the dot that's causing the bad search expression. substitute uses a weird regex implementation, so you need to escape special characters:

Code: [Select]
#substitute(
    'Sales Orders'
  , 'Sales'
  , substitute(
      'Calendar Order Date'
    , 'Calendar'
    , substitute(
        'Calendar Order Date\.Month'
      , 'Month'
      , prompt (   'pPeriod','mun' )
    )
  )
)#

I also prefer to use a macro prompt instead of the ? alias. I'm not sure how well this will work using aliases, I know the alias will expand into the macro at process time, but I don't know how the substitute will work with it.

Reporting / How to swap dimensions using string manipulation?
« Last post by oscarca on Today at 01:42:00 am »
Hello Cognoise community,

I have report in Cognos 11 with two crosstabs and one prompt that uses two different cubes. What I want to accomplish is to sync the slicing/filtering using one Date dimension for both of them. So when you choose a date in the value prompt (based on the Date dimension from the "Sales Orders" cube) it should be able to filter the second crosstab that is using a Date dimension from the "Sales"

The MUN from the "Sales Orders" cube looks like this:

[Sales Orders].[Calendar Order Date].[Calendar Order Date.Month].[Month]->:[M14].[[Calendar Order Date]].[Month]].&[201811]]]

The MUN for the "Sales" cube looks like this:

[Sales].[Calendar].[Month].[Month]->:[M14].[[Calendar]].[Month]].&[201811]]]

This is what I have tried using the substitute function:

#substitute('Sales Orders','Sales',substitute('Calendar Order Date','Calendar',substitute('Calendar Order Date.Month','Month','[Sales Orders].[Calendar Order Date].[Calendar Order Date.Month].[Month] -> ?pPeriod?')))#

But I end up getting the error message : The macro functions contains a bad search pattern

Does anyone know how to solve this? All help, tips and ideas are greatly appreciated

Another (sketchy) solution -- at least if you use SQL Server -- is to use SQL Server to present the Excel file as a view in the database.  Then you can put it in a package and the data is updated whenever the user updates it.  Everybody has the most current version for reporting.

Wow!  Did I really recommend yet another way to help users make horrible decisions based on faulty data?

I know one of the guys behind Apparo, and would be very happy to connect you.

In terms of hacky data-entry implementations I have revisited it recently. Instead of relying on a stored procedure I wrote a custom control to call an API (in this case to TM1) to pass the data in. It's more work on the JavaScript side to make it reusable across multiple reports, but once you've got it it's significantly easier on the report author.

we have used Python script to auto upload from google share folder to cognos... we are looking for IBM or google solution but Python for now is fully scalable, sitting it in the same folder as the files.

Here's the IBM technote on this topic:

Hello MF,

Thanks for the response.
Appreciate all the inputs and guidance. :)

I'm also interested in others that may have some experience with this product.

We have an enterprise project to get rid of the various MS Access solutions built by John and Jill business users. Cognos is being advertised as being a part of those solutions. I got asked again about data entry within Cognos and gave my standard answer, that Cognos is meant for reporting, not data entry; it's possible (e.g. the article from CognosPaul), but painful. Then I came across Apparo's website & it *looks* like it could give these MS Access people a one-stop shop for their data entry & reporting "apps".

Does it live up to the hype on their website? Since nothing lives up to the hype on their websites, how close does it get?
